![]() ![]() You have different types of people in different districts, depending on where they are. ![]() In those areas, we'll find nightlife, in terms of people, whereas the industrial areas are a little more bleak. There are other areas, like the Bowery, which is a really grim area with a lot of crime, nightclubs, and old theaters. You have all kinds of people living and working there, but it's mostly a financial area we have a lot of banking institutions. The downtown area is mainly the Elliot zone - it's richer. Each borough is where a particular Gotham family moved, basically had a huge influence over that area, and that area developed differently from the other ones.įor example, on the south side, where the Cobblepots were, they were driving big steel mills and mining operations, so to this day, that whole area is an industrial center for all of Gotham. From the very beginning, the Court of Owls was right at the center of it, as well as the founding families that populated the different parts. How we got there, it stemmed from the very start thinking of what is Gotham, and let's delve into the past of Gotham right down to the 1600s when it was founded. Olaf Quinzanos: We wanted to make sure that all of our districts had really unique identities. What was it about making each neighborhood and its populace distinct from one another? We're designing these down to every little connection on the buckle and shoelace. What is our own layer? A lot of the time, it's adding a layer of almost groundedness or realism you might not have in the comic book. We wanted to respect that, take that and add our own layer on it and give that back to it. ![]() It may not be a specific drawing from so many amazing artists from stuff before. How did you want to design them, and what did you want to retain from their comic book designs?Įvans: Most of the characters in the game, including the Knights and villains, start from comic book references. Gotham Knights is the first time we really see the Court of Owls in video game form. He's really just a force, all the way through, with animation and gameplay, but we still have a lot of recognizable things, with the white chunk of his hair. Some of the things are what led to changes to the character, with his face and body type. Don’t forget to check out the reveal of the game which appeared during the recent DC Fandome event as well.Drawing from the comic book roots, we're looking at shape language, and for Jason, it's a square and kind of block-ish, as opposed to Nightwing, who is sharper angled and has speed. Set to release sometime in 2021 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, stay tuned to Shacknews for all the latest details on what we can expect out of Gotham Knights. With that in mind, it certainly seems like there will be plenty of fun in seeing how Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Batgirl mesh in their combat and exploration. Redding and Fleur would go on to say that Gotham Knights could be played offline, as a solo experience, and one in which you don’t even have to change characters if you don’t want. But it's not a grind, it's not a situation where you'll say, ‘Oh, God, I have to go grind this type of mission in order to level up to this, and then I can get this.’” “But even some of the types of enemies that you're going to be coming up against. “It's true that, as you are getting more powerful in your progression, you're going to see a sliding scale in terms of not just the level of the enemies,” Redding explained. Redding would go on to further describe the design philosophies of Gotham Knights and the pitfalls the team is trying to avoid in designing a progressing co-op experience. “There is an ability tree, which is different for each of the characters, and then there's gear that you craft - and so choices that you're going to be making - but that does not mean that this is a game-as-service.” “This is very much not designed as a game-as-service,” Fleur told IGN. From the get-go, Fleur stressed that this won’t be an ongoing co-op experience in which content and events are added on the fly. Gotham Knights Creative Director Patrick Redding and Senior Producer Fleur Marty spoke to various questions including the state of progression and exploration in the game in an interview with IGN on August 26, 2020. Not only will the game not be games-as-service, but you can play solo and explore without fear of having to grind levels to reach an area of the city. Fortunately, Gotham Knights leads recently clarified that won’t be the case. Giving players a chance to explore an open-world city as one or several of the extended Bat Family sounds enticing, but it also sounds like a recipe for a co-op grind. WB Games Montreal is set to take Batman universe video games in a pretty unique direction with Gotham Knights. ![]()
